Help: Keyword Search
Keyword Search helps you construct complicated word or phrase searches without knowing all the details. Here is a brief explanation of each field. (We recommend only using one of these fields at a time because the more information you enter, the fewer verses you will find.)
Include ALL of these words – Finds all of these words in the same verse
Include this EXACT phrase – Finds the exact phrase in a verse
Include at least ONE of these words – Finds any or all of these words in a verse
Do NOT include ANY of these words – Finds verses that do not contain these words. Please note that, there must be a word(s) in one of the "Include" fields. Entering words ONLY in this field will result in an error.
Include ONLY ONE of these words – Finds instances when only one of these words occurs in a verse
Case Sensitive – Selecting case sensitive limits the search result to only words that match the case of the word. For example: searching for the word "Lord" does not find verses containing the word "lord."
Select Version – Click on the drop down to select a specific Bible translation.
Keyword Wildness
Because Zondervan Bible Search is powered by Pradis®, the searching capability is extremely powerful. With as little as two characters of a word, you can put this power to work in your searches by using the asterisk and the question mark. The asterisk represents any number of characters or any number of words. The question mark represents any single character. Here are some examples:
Search: "bapt*"
Finds "baptist", "baptize", "Baptist"—essentially, any word starting with "bapt"
Search: "creat*"
Finds "creator", "created", "creatures"—essentially, any word starting with "creat"
Search: "peac???????"
Finds "peacemakers" or any word starting with "peac" and followed by seven letters
Search: "?ee?"
Finds "seed", "teem", or any word consisting of one character followed by "ee" and ending with another character. (This is very useful when putting together Bible crossword puzzles.)
Keyword Search Options
These options control the way your search results appear. Here are examples of each selection for a search on the word "peace":
By Passage: Results are shown with the entire verse that contains the word(s).
Luke 2:14
Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.
By Concordance: Results are shown with a few words on each side of the word(s).
Luke 2:14
heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom
By Reference Only: Results are shown by the reference only. Luke 2:14
Book Assistant
This assistant allows you to add Bibles to your search. To add a Bible, select the translation you wish to open and then click "Add Bible" button. The default display of multiple Bible search is Side-by-Side. There must be at least one Bible selected.
Range Assistant
The Range Assistant makes it possible to search portions of the Bible. There are 11 pre-defined ranges. You can also create your own range by clicking on the "Books of the Bible" radio button. This changes the list on the left to all Bible and Deuterocanonical books. Click on a Bible book or Predefined Range to select it. Then click the "Add" button to add it to the list on the right. Only the Ranges or Bible books listed on the right will be searched. To remove the items on the right, click on the Range or Bible book and click on the "Remove" button. Clicking on the "Add all" or "Remove all" will act on the entire list without selecting a Bible book or Range. If there are no Ranges or Bible books selected the entire Bible will be searched. Note: Deuterocanonical books (or the Apocrypha) will only be searched if a Bible containing those books is selected.
Keyword Search Results
There are two "context" links available: a short context and the entire chapter containing the search word(s).
Adding Bibles: Adding a Bible to any search result is easy. Select a Bible by clicking on the down arrow next to "choose a Bible" then click on the "Add" (plus sign) button. The "Stacked" and "Side-by-Side" icons become active after adding one or more Bibles to your search results.
Side-by-Side: By default Zondervan Bible Search displays Bibles Side-by-Side (like a parallel Bible). When you do a Keyword search with two or more translations, the verses that contain the word are listed in all the translations searched. If a translation does not contain the search word or phrase it appears next to the other translation so that you can easily compare translations.
Stacked: Click on the "Stacked" icon to make multiple Bible translations scroll one after the other or "stacked" on top of each other.
Formatting the Context of Keyword Searches
After clicking on one of the context links in your search results, click on to the "More passage search options" to format the Bible text. See help on "Passage Options for this search" in the "Passage Search" section for more information.
Keyword Search Results in the NIV
Because of the work of the Committee on Bible Translation—John Kohlenberger III and Ed Goodrich—the NIV contains a great deal of "knowledge" about the original Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek texts from which it was translated. You see this knowledge when you do a search on the NIV and find additional words highlighted that you didn’t search for. These words are either "equal words," words which are required in English to completely represent the original words, or they are some form of "assist words" that make the translation of the Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek words easier to understand and more accurately represent the intent of the author. On Zondervan Bible Search, the "equal words" are highlighted and bolded. All forms of "assist words" are highlighted only. This highlighting helps you better understand the original texts of the Bible without knowing the languages. ONLY Zondervan Bible Search site and software powered by Pradis for Windows does accurate highlighting of the NIV.
